The Three Kinds of Sinners — And the One Savior We All Need

The movie Sinners got one thing absolutely right: we are all sinners. No one is exempt. Whether we’ve lied, judged, hated, or simply turned away from what we know is right, we’ve all fallen short. But the beauty of this truth is that it points us to something greater—our need for salvation, and ultimately, our need for a Savior.

In this broken world, there are three kinds of sinners. Understanding these distinctions can help us reflect on where we stand and where we’re headed. Let’s explore each one:

1. The Sinner Who Follows Jesus

This is the person who not only believes in Jesus but also strives to walk in His footsteps. They’ve accepted Christ as their Savior and are actively seeking to live out His teachings. They repent when they fall, they forgive as they’ve been forgiven, and they love because He first loved them.

  • They know they’re not perfect—but they’re pursuing holiness.

  • They don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk.

  • Their faith is alive, shown through obedience, humility, and service.

These sinners are not sinless—they’re simply surrendered. They’ve placed their trust in Jesus and are being transformed daily by His grace.

2. The Sinner Who Believes in Jesus (But Doesn’t Follow)

This person believes Jesus is real. They may even believe He died for their sins. But their life doesn’t reflect that belief. There’s no relationship, no transformation, no obedience. Their faith is more of a concept than a commitment.

  • They may attend church or pray occasionally, but Jesus isn’t Lord of their life.

  • They know the truth but haven’t let it change them.

  • They’re stuck in the space between belief and surrender.

This kind of sinner is in a dangerous place—not because God’s grace isn’t available, but because they haven’t fully embraced it. Belief without action is like a seed that never grows.

3. The Sinner Who Does Not Believe or Follow Jesus

This is the person who either rejects Jesus or has never encountered Him. They live life on their own terms, unaware or unconvinced of their need for a Savior.

  • They may be kind, moral, or even spiritual—but Jesus isn’t part of their story.

  • They carry the weight of sin without knowing there’s freedom available.

  • They may not realize the eternal consequences of their unbelief.

Yet even for this sinner, hope is not lost. Jesus died for all sinners—every single one. His arms are open wide, ready to receive anyone who turns to Him.

The Good News for All Sinners

No matter which kind of sinner you are, the message is the same: Jesus came for you.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

We don’t clean ourselves up to come to Jesus—we come as we are, and He does the transforming. Whether you’re following, believing, or still searching, the invitation is open: Come to Jesus. Be forgiven. Be made new.
