“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” — 1 Corinthians 9:24
For more than 22 years, I’ve lived at the intersection of faith, family, and athletics. As a head basketball coach, a father, and a pastor leading Holy Hoops, I’ve watched sports transform young lives in ways that screens never will. In a world where digital distractions can suffocate our kids, sports offer something far better — a path toward strength, character, and purpose.
And I’ve seen it firsthand.
Sports Develop the Whole Child — Body, Mind, and Spirit
Sports don’t just build athletes. They build people.
1. Athletic Development
Children grow stronger, faster, and more coordinated. They learn discipline, practice habits, and perseverance.
2. Emotional Intelligence
Sports teach kids how to handle:
Pressure
Failure
Constructive criticism
High‑stakes moments
These are emotional muscles they will use for the rest of their lives.
3. Social Skills & Teamwork
On a team, kids learn:
Communication
Cooperation
Leadership
Respect
They discover how to work with others toward a shared goal — something every adult needs.
4. Confidence & Identity
Success on the court builds confidence off the court. Kids learn they can grow, improve, and overcome.
What the Research Shows
Modern studies confirm what coaches and parents have known for generations:
Kids who play sports are 15% more likely to attend college (Aspen Institute).
Student‑athletes have up to 40% higher levels of self‑esteem (Journal of Youth Development).
Youth sports participation reduces anxiety and depression by 20–30% (American Academy of Pediatrics).
Former youth athletes earn 7–10% more in adulthood due to improved discipline and teamwork skills (Economic Journal).
Teens in sports are 25% less likely to engage in risky behaviors (CDC).
Sports don’t just prepare kids for games — they prepare them for life.
The Gospel in the Game
As a pastor, I’ve always believed that basketball has a holistic origin story — one that naturally opens doors to the gospel. Dr. James Naismith created the game with a vision for character formation, community, and Christ‑centered values.
That’s why Holy Hoops has existed for over two decades: to help young people encounter Jesus Christ — Lord, Savior, and the Risen One — through the rhythms of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Sports give us a language to talk about:
Running the race
Finishing well
Pressing through adversity
Living with purpose
Paul understood this. That’s why he used athletic imagery to call believers to a life of intentionality and focus.
Preparing Kids to “Run the Race”
When we put our children in sports, we’re not just signing them up for a season. We’re preparing them for adulthood.
We’re teaching them to:
Show up
Work hard
Handle pressure
Respect authority
Persevere through difficulty
Celebrate others
Rise after failure
These are the qualities that help them run the race of life — and run it well.
Final Encouragement
So put your kids in sports. Give them the gift of movement, teamwork, discipline, and joy. Let them grow strong — physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.
Help them “run in such a way as to get the prize” — the prize of being well‑formed, well‑prepared, and ready for the life God has set before them.
God bless you and your family as you help your children run their race.
