Grace That Goes Before Us

One of the most beautiful truths about God is that His love for us is not dependent on our beliefs, behavior, or character. Whether we acknowledge Him or not, God’s love remains steadfast, unconditional, and ever-present. He longs for a relationship with each of us—not because we’ve earned it, but because He is love.

Growing up in the Methodist tradition, I was shaped by the teachings of the Wesleyan faith, especially the concept of prevenient grace. This is the grace that goes before us—the divine love that surrounds us even before we are aware of it. It’s the gentle nudge, the quiet whisper, the open door that invites us into relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

As I reflect on my own journey, I see the fingerprints of that grace everywhere. I see it in my parents’ decision to have me baptized as an infant. I see it in the faith of my grandmother and mother, who spoke to me about God. I see it in the pastors, youth leaders, and mentors who walked alongside me, guiding me toward the moment I came to understand my need for Christ.

That moment—when I recognized my sin, confessed it, and accepted the saving grace of Jesus Christ—was when I became justified in Him. But the journey didn’t stop there. From that point on, I began walking in sanctifying grace, growing in faith through spiritual practices like prayer, studying Scripture, and staying connected to a community of believers who hold me accountable and encourage me in my walk with Christ.

Friend, God loves you. He wants a relationship with you. His grace is already at work in your life, drawing you closer, even if you don’t realize it yet.
