Do I Really Need to Go to Church? An Honest Look at Faith, Community, and the Messy State of the Modern Church

There’s a question a lot of people are asking today—sometimes out loud, sometimes quietly in their hearts:
“Do I really need to go to church?”
It’s a fair question. In fact, it’s an honest one. Many people have been living life without church for so long that it feels normal. We work hard, we hustle, we grind, and we tell ourselves, “By the sweat of my brow I get what I get.” And in a world that celebrates independence, it’s easy to believe we can do faith the same way—solo, self-sufficient, on our own terms.
And let’s be real:
The state of the universal church hasn’t helped.
There’s nonsense out there. Hypocrisy. Politics. Performances. Churches that have drifted far from what God intended. Churches that wound instead of heal. Churches that look more like corporations than communities of grace.
So when people say, “I don’t need church,” I don’t blame them. I understand it. I’ve felt it.
But here’s the tension we can’t escape:
A relationship with God is personal—but it was never meant to be private.
Walking with God through Jesus Christ is the greatest blessing in a life that can be challenging, confusing, and sometimes downright brutal. I’d rather face this world with God by my side than without Him. That part is clear.
But God didn’t design us to walk with Him alone.
Even in the Garden—before sin, before brokenness—God looked at Adam and said,
“It is not good for man to be alone.”
If Adam needed community in a perfect world, how much more do we need it in a broken one?
Why Church Still Matters (Even When It’s Messy)
Church isn’t about checking a box.
It’s not about tradition for tradition’s sake.
It’s not about pretending everything is fine.
Church is about:
Conversation—real talk about God, life, struggle, hope
Accountability—people who help you stay grounded in truth
Formation—being shaped into Christ’s likeness
Belonging—a spiritual family, not a weekly event
Mission—joining God’s work in the world
Worship—lifting our eyes off ourselves and onto the risen Christ
You can’t get all of that alone.
You weren’t meant to.
But What About Churches That Have Lost Their Way?
Yes—there are many.
Yes—some have drifted from Scripture.
Yes—some have become something God never intended.
But that doesn’t mean the Church is broken beyond repair.
It means we need to be wise.
It means we need to discern.
It means we need to seek out communities that worship Christ in Spirit and in truth.
You don’t need a perfect church.
You need a faithful one.
So Should You Go to Church?
If you want to grow in Christ—yes.
If you want to be known, supported, challenged, and encouraged—yes.
If you want to walk in the fullness of what God designed—yes.
But don’t just go anywhere.
Go church shopping.
Find a community that:
Preaches Christ crucified and risen
Loves people more than programs
Pursues truth over trends
Lives out the gospel, not just talks about it
Welcomes the broken, the searching, and the skeptical
Points everything back to Jesus
And if you’re searching—if you’re longing for a place to start or restart your journey with God—there’s a church in a small corner of the world that would love to welcome you.
